Nourish Us: A Table Song for the Spiritually Hungry

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic–the week after we were no longer allowed to gather for worship–New City was invited to a 24hr fast and time of prayer.

My family and I have the custom of sometimes singing a song or prayer of thanksgiving before enjoying our meals. A while back I had written a text for this purpose and it came to mind that same week. I checked it out and was pleasantly surprised at how fitting it was to the season we were in and that we didn’t even know we were getting into…

Lord, we come to You
In thanksgiving for this food
Build our bodies, give us strength
Let us know that You are good.

But our souls, Lord, satisfy
Nourish us with meals divine;
Feasts of Spirit and Your Word,
Granting joy, and peace, and life.

Amen

In Christ, rest assured that there is no fasting without a promised feast. Until the day of feasting comes, His Spirit and Word are sufficient to satisfy even the most famished soul. Singing this truth is one more way you can remind yourself of this reality!
