The Glorious God Of Life
A verse from my sermon passage for this coming Sunday stood out to me in the light of the decision reached this week by New York lawmakers concerning unborn children.
“And they glorified God because of me.” (Galatians 1:24).
Paul was describing how people were amazed by the power and grace of God to see how someone as bad off, hardened, and spiritually lost as Paul was now “born-again” as a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy…” he writes in vs. 23.
Paul’s new spiritual birth left people astounded. The only way for them to respond to such a display of God’s power and creativity was to basically say, “God is amazing. God is good. God is powerful. He alone is God.”
However, he was attacked for the rest of his life. His opponents did not attribute Paul’s new birth or his gospel to the power of God, but to the work of man.
I am reminded that every time God creates a human being and knits that person together in the womb of his or her mother, God intends for this new life to display his power and creativity, and the only way for us to respond to such a display of God’s power and creativity is to basically say, “God is amazing. God is good. God is powerful. He alone is God.” In other words, our only response to God’s new creation seen in children unborn and born is to “glorify God because of her or him.”
However, sadly, God’s creation of new life is attacked every day. The recent decision concerning the unborn in New York is nothing less than an attack on the glory of God’s power, creativity and goodness.
It is good for us to remember that every human being, in every place, of every race, born and unborn, is a uniquely crafted person to somehow show off God’s greatness.
For this reason, the promotion of death toward anyone that God has made for his own glory is a grievous, outrageously dark and evil action.
May the truth of God continue to prevail over the lies that blanket so many of our law and decision makers. May the grace of God prevail over the hardness of our own hearts so that we will promote life and glorify God.
